Redmi AirDots S: Indistinct Upgrade?

Even though the whole world in under a huge heave right now, the smartphone companies seem to be doing fine. There has quite a few launches this month from China. After the recent launch of OnePlus’s wireless Bullet Z, Xiaomi has launched a new iteration to their Redmi AirDots.

Redmi AirDots gained lot of appreciation back in April 2019. It was quite a surprise from Xiaomi. It had a great design, had all the necessary features and an unexpectedly great offering for the price. Just for around, Rs 1300, people were getting a truly wireless earphone with a very decent audio quality. Now, a year later we have an upgrade to the Redmi AirDots, the company calls them Redmi AirDots S.

Well, the upgrades aren’t major but let’s see what the changes are

What’s New?

The major change is with the pairing. The Redmi AirDots originally used master-slave connection which means- your first earbud is connected to the phone while the second earbud pairs with the first earbud.

Now they have changed it where both the earbuds are connected to your phone. In short, they removed master-slave connection. You can use both of them at once (stereo) or single one of them (mono) as per your convenience. The switching is now smoother and seamless as you don’t need to repair you AirDots again.

Xiaomi added the low latency game mode too. You can activate it by triple clicking your earbuds. For it reduces transmission delays and increases better audio-video synchronization, it’s a good addition.

The company says that the data transmission is increased by 2X, from the previous ones. It is yet to be tested as it still uses the same Bluetooth 5.0 technology.

Other Features

The AirDots uses 7.2mm drivers for audio and a DSP for ambient noise reduction. They are IPx4 rated – which means they are splash proof but not water resistance. The battery life goes up to 4 hours on single charge and can extend up to 12hrs with the case. There is support for voice assistants with a double tap on the earbud. You can also accept calls and play/pause music with single tap. On the long press you can reject the incoming calls.

The earbuds are 4.1grams and comes with 2pairs of silicon ear-tips, extra, with the box.
